Why Do Birds Suddenly Appear? Answer Is More Than A Song

Why Do Birds Suddenly Appear - The Answer Is More Than A Song

In 1970, a song was recorded by the Carpenters, an old musical duo. The lyrics start with, “Why do birds appear every time you are near?  They long to be close to you.”

That’s a romantic line, but asides from that, we know it happens that birds can suddenly appear, and not to serenade a lover.

But why do birds suddenly appear? This sudden behavior is one of many avian behaviors that can be both sweet and baffling.

So, we seek to answer the thought-provoking question that must be on your mind for you to be reading this article.

Birds have different reasons for suddenly appearing. Some of the most common factors are natural disasters that force the birds to move from one area to another.

Migration is the next common reason, and then we have those who might have been released from captivity.

Read on to find out more as we delve deep into the mystery of suddenly appearing birds.

Why Do Birds Suddenly Appear?

In romantic comedies and songs of the same nature, birds appearing is often a sign of joy, happening, and an idyllic existence.

In reality, this behavior has very few romantic attachments. Here are some reasons birds suddenly appear:

Migration

A lot of bird species move from one area to another, examples of which are songbirds, snowy owls, arctic terns, swallows, and hummingbirds.

Migration often happens during spring, though some don’t have a particular migratory pattern. The main reason for migration is to find better resources.

Migratory birds move in flocks and can give the impression of appearing out of nowhere. This could either occur at night or during the early morning hours.

Release from Captivity

If you find birds randomly appearing at a period when migration is unlikely, another plausible reason is that they got released from somewhere.

This is a part of the Buddhist tradition but is also a program of its own known as captive breeding and reintroduction.1 The latter is a good tool to preserve species.2

When the captive birds are released back into the wild, they are sometimes released in a flock.

Habitat Loss

Birds can lose their home due to natural and human factors.

The hurricane is an example of a natural disaster that could force birds to move en masse, looking for another place to be in.

Human activities like deforestation and agriculture also contribute to birds being homeless.

Food

Birds love food, and they’re always drawn toward an area with enough for survival. This is one of the major reasons they migrate.

In cities, birds have learned to associate humans with food and don’t have any wariness that characterizes animals with little human interaction.

Thus, they may move in your direction if they see you with the food they can eat.

Some of the more daring birds might even try stealing from you. If you’re at a park with snacks, don’t be surprised when birds surface out of nowhere.

Startled Reaction

We assume birds come out of nowhere because they are sometimes hidden until something draws them out.

Birds get startled with ease and will take to flight when they feel endangered.

When birds suddenly fly out of a particular environment, perhaps they get startled.

It could be from a dog trying to express its hunting instinct, a car driving by, or even you when you get too close to where they roost.

Love for Humans

Many bird species are comfortable around humans, especially when they realize you won’t harm them.

They would especially come close if you have food, much like the pigeon woman in Home Alone 2.

When next you get to a park or any other open environment, be sure to have extra treats for the birds!

Environment

If you have a garden or live close to a wooded area, don’t be surprised if you get avian visitors at night and dawn.

Birds live in nests and build them in forests and gardens. If the birds are a nuisance to you (especially at night), there are safe ways you can discourage them from your property.

However, they are not always pests, and you could keep them coming by putting up a bird feeder or a bird bath.

Bird Symbolism: What is the Significance of Birds Appearing?

In reality, there’s no special meaning to birds appearing. It is a natural behavior that can be triggered by different factors.

However, these creatures often appear as symbols; over the years, they have come to mean different things.

In the romantic context, the phrase “birds appearing out of nowhere” is now used similarly to how we say “butterflies in the stomach.” It is a term that describes the surreal feeling of falling in love.

This explains why there are often birds chirping or flying in romantic scenes.

Birds also symbolize joy, happiness, or just an upbeat mood. Alongside sunlight and bright colors, chirping birds or a flock flying out of nowhere are symbols of a good day.

Finally, birds have a religious significance, especially when they appear out of nowhere.

Doves are especially valued, and birds, in general, are used to teach ethics. In the religious context, birds flying by is often a symbol of joy, except for owls and crows.

Final Thoughts: Do Birds Just Appear?

Besides movies, birds are not supernatural beings that float out of a different realm.

It seems that way from our perspective because these creatures either stay hidden or move from one location to another.

It still is nature’s beauty to see birds moving by, especially species with colorful plumages. The magic remains.
